Clinical Skin Peels

  • Lactic Acid contains the largest molecular size of the 3 available AHA’s. Its large size allows it to slowly and gently absorb into the skin to renew aged skins and restore hydration.

    Mandelic Acid is known as an AHA that ‘acts like’ a BHA. While being able to lift sun damage and stimulate collagen production, it’s also able to reduce oil flow and reduce pore size.

    Glycolic Acid has the smallest molecular size of any AHA which allows it to penetrate the skin the quickest. By absorbing quickly into the skin, it results in the greatest amount of shedding which make it the preferred Skin Peel option for aged and sun damaged skins.

    Salicylic Acid has oil soluble molecules which allow them to easily pass through the lipid barrier of the skin and decongest clogged pores for clearer and blemish free skin. Its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties also help to soothe inflamed acne skins and help prevent future breakouts.

How does Cosmelan work?

The Cosmelan® formula contains an exclusive combination of active ingredients with proven efficacy, which act on all stages of the hyperpigmentation process to completely eliminate existing hyperpigmentations, preventing both their reappearance and the appearance of new dark spots.

Regulating Action
Cosmelan® works at two levels: At the first level by inhibiting the activation of tyrosinase inside the melanosome, reducing the oxidative stress, and thereby reducing melanin synthesis; at a second level, by containing copper chelators (Cu2+) tyrosinase function is reduced. Cosmelan® acts by blocking the transfer of the melanosome to the keratinocytes, thereby preventing movement of the pigment to the superficial layers of the skin.

Corrective Action
It acts by reducing the amount of melanin synthesized, reducing the intensity of the dark spot. It also acts on the stratum corneum, stimulating the renewal of the epidermis and intensively eliminating the accumulation of melanin.

FAQ

  • Although often referred to as a Skin Peel, the Cosmelan treatment goes beyond a peel. Unlike peels, which act on the surface of the problem, Cosmelan gets to the root of the problem.

    It consists in a treatment that visibly removes and attenuates pigmentation spots (like a peel) while exerting a regulating action that corrects the overproduction of pigmentation and prevents the spots from reappearing.

  • Cosmelan can treat all types of pigmentations derived from the over-production of melanin which may have been triggered by hormones, sun exposure, genetics or scarring. Cosmelan effectively treats melasma, post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation (PIH), and freckles (sun spots).

  • Cosmelan may be performed anytime of the year if you are able to ensure the treated area is not exposed to long periods of intense sun exposure. Ideally, the autumn and winter months are the most advisable time for treatment due to this requirement.



    However in instances when sun exposure cannot be avoided, greater care and the use of a very high sunscreen, such as

    to be applied liberally and the time spent outdoors to be kept an absolute minimum.

  • The most significant changes occur in the first few weeks, you should see an improvement in skin texture and a noticeable decrease in pigmentation. This can give a misleading feeling of success.

    During this period melanin has been removed from the outermost skin layers, and therefore we see the pigmentation much more faded and the skin smoother and softer, but the origin of the problem has not been controlled yet.

    The melanocyte, a cell where melanin is produced, is still uncontrolled and continues to produce pigment (melanin) in excess. To control this overproduction, it is important to continue a home treatment with regulating action to prevent the pigmentation from reappearing.

  • As it is not an invasive treatment, it does not make you unable to fulfil your activities of daily living normally. Caution must be exerted when fulfilling some type of activities during the first days, a skin adaptation period after the cabin treatment. For instance, it is advisable to avoid bathing in swimming pools, prolonged sun exposure and activities that involve excessive sweating.

  • After your professional in-clinic treatment, excess pigmentation can be removed visibly. However, it is a dynamic process, where the imbalance forming them can cause their recurrence. Therefore, even if the spots are not seen, it is essential to apply a daily regulatory depigmentation treatment and photoprotection throughout the year to prevent repigmentation.

  • When used correctly and under the supervision of your Skin Specialist, there should be no side effects.

    Cosmelan is a topical treatment, therefore minimally invasive, that does not prevent you from following your normal daily life. During the initial phase and following the treatment, the skin may become irritated or show redness.

    This is totally normal and expected, and it will disappear within a few days. During the home phase, it is common to experience slight peeling and sensitivity, which are symptoms that disappear when applying the home products recommended by your Skin Specialist.
